Where to buy kava in Poland (and is it legal?)

Kava in Poland

Poland is an unusual case for kava. It is home to at least two of the vendors that ship kava across the EU, including Kavaha, which operates this site, yet Polish food law does not permit kava to be sold as a dietary supplement. If you are in Poland and searching for kava, the legal answer is more specific than a flat yes or no, and it matters for what you can expect to find labelled and sold as.

This guide sets out exactly what current Polish law says, using the primary regulatory source, then lists the vendors that ship to Poland using the same pricing and sourcing data kava.fyi tracks for every country. Nothing here is medical advice, and no vendor has paid for placement.

Legal status in Poland

Kava (Piper methysticum, called pieprz metystynowy in Polish) may not lawfully be used in dietary supplements in Poland. On 30 August 2021 the Team for Dietary Supplements (Zespol do spraw Suplementow Diety), the advisory body attached to the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) under article 9(2a) of the Act of 14 March 1985 on the State Sanitary Inspection, adopted Resolution No. 6/2021 listing substances and plant raw materials that must not be used in dietary supplements. Pieprz metystynowy (Piper methysticum) appears on that list. GIS uses the Team's resolutions as the basis for its own market surveillance and product notifications, so a dietary supplement containing kava is treated as non-compliant food law in Poland on this basis.

This is a narrower and more recent restriction than the one often quoted for Poland. Kava was placed on the list of group I-N narcotic drugs by the 2009 amendment to the Act on Counteracting Drug Addiction (ustawa o przeciwdziałaniu narkomanii), which for several years put possession and trade in the same legal category as controlled drugs. That classification was removed by the Minister of Health's regulation of 17 August 2018 on the list of psychotropic substances, narcotic drugs and new psychoactive substances, which superseded the earlier list and did not carry kava forward as a narcotic. Kava kava is therefore not currently a controlled narcotic substance in Poland, but it is banned from dietary supplements under the 2021 resolution, which is the category almost all commercially sold kava falls into. State this plainly: as things stand, a dietary supplement containing kava cannot lawfully be sold in Poland, even though the plant itself is not classed as a narcotic.

The EU-level position applies on top of this. Kava is not in the EU's Union list of authorised novel foods under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, so it also cannot lawfully be marketed as a food ingredient in Poland, independent of the national supplement rules above. Vendors based in Poland that sell kava typically do so labelled as a botanical or collector's product rather than as a supplement or food, a different legal category that does not itself authorise it as something to prepare and drink under Polish law.

Where to buy (ships to Poland)

The vendors below are drawn from kava.fyi's own vendor data and listed alphabetically, not ranked by quality. None of them pay to be listed. One of them, Kavaha, is based in Poland and is operated by the same people who run kava.fyi; that is disclosed here and nowhere else in this guide. Each vendor is included because it is based in Poland, states EU-wide delivery, or specifically names Poland on its own shipping page, which was checked directly.

For a running comparison of prices across all vendors kava.fyi tracks, see the product and price list.

What to look for

Whichever vendor you choose, the same checks apply. Look for noble kava varieties rather than tudei or two-day varieties, since noble cultivars have the longer history of safe traditional use and a chemotype profile associated with fewer side effects; see kava.fyi's guide to cultivars for how to tell them apart. Decide what form suits you: traditional grind needs kneading in water or a strainer bag and tastes closest to how it is prepared in the Pacific, micronised powder is finer and faster to prepare, and instant or soluble extracts dissolve straight into water but vary widely in strength and processing method. Read kava.fyi's preparation guide before your first session. Ask whether a vendor publishes third-party lab results for kavalactone content and contaminants; only one of the vendors listed above currently does, and a published certificate of analysis is one of the few objective signals of quality you can check yourself. For a fuller picture of what kava does and does not do, see the effects guide. One health note applies regardless of vendor or country: kava and alcohol should not be combined, and anyone taking medication that is metabolised by the liver should speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using kava, because of the shared metabolic pathway.
